JUNGFRAUJOCH

If you want to feel on top of the world, Jungfraujoch is it. Jungfraujoch’s peak is 11,333 feet so you are officially at the top of Europe. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of neighboring countries. It is the most magnificent view in Europe.

Things You Need to Know About Jungfraujoch

Traveling to Jungfraujoch on a clear day is a “must”. My suggestion is take a day tour to Jungfraujoch because the altitude is so physically challenging and exhausting by the end of your tour you do not want to have to think about anything except finding your way to the tour bus.

From Zurich, the tour is a full-day trip to Jungfraujoch. The tour that I experienced stopped for a few minutes in Interlaken so we could have a light lunch and do a little shopping. In Interlaken, we boarded at train that took us to about three train stations. We had to travel to Lauterbrunnen, Kleine Scheidegg and finally, Jungfraujoch. Traveling with a tour group recommended by my hotel made it so easy.

What to Wear

Regardless of what time of the year you travel to Jungfraujoch, wear a very warm coat, boots with plenty of traction, scarf, hat and gloves. It gets very cold on the top of the Swiss Alps.

Carry some ice grippers for your boots because you will walk through an ice tunnel to visit an ice palace before reaching the Sphinx Observation Terrace. Although the tunnel has railings, you are still walking on ice.

Precautions: Walk Slowly and Drink Plenty of Water

I cannot emphasis it enough to conserve your energy by walking very slowly on the mountain. The air is very thin due to the altitude. Keeping yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps some.

Points of Interest

Sphinx Observation Terrace – The panoramic view from the Sphinx Observation Terrace is one of the most breathtaking views in the world. In the middle of the terrace is a flag pole with a Swiss flag making you feel like you have reached the moon. There is plenty of snow on the terrace so walk carefully. If you choose to not step outside for the view, the observatory offers many incredible views from indoors, as well.

Ice Palace – This is one of the most unique experiences I have had. It is such a pleasant surprise to walk through an ice tunnel and see so many beautiful ice sculptures.

Souvenir Shop and Restaurants - There is a souvenir shop and several restaurants in the Observatory. Be sure to eat something before returning to the train station.
